OK, so I just got a Vista machine and now I find I cannot access my Gmail account. The page loads, I see it briefly for less than a second, then it goes blank. The only indication is that there is a small yellow triangle (with an exclamation mark in it) icon in the lower left of the browser, followed by the word "Done"

Gmail works correctly if I uncheck "Enable Protected Mode" in the security settings of IE7, or if I hold the CTL key down when loading the page.

From what I can read, Protected Mode is supposed to help me by blocking malicious code from invading my system when using IE7, so I am not sure I really want to turn it off. But, since I use Gmail a lot, I was wondering if there is some work-around or setting I can set to bypass this check when I use Gmail?

System is an Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0Ghz, with 4GB RAM - using lated patched Vista Home Premium

As a workaround, why don't you try using Firefox's Web Browser. In my opinion it is more stable than Internet Explorer and the add-on's which are available make the whole web browsing experience more enjoyable.

Yeah, I know... I have Firefox and it works fine there. It's just that I am used to IE and old habits die hard. Furthermore, this seems to be a setting unique to Vista, as I do not see it on XP

See if adding the gmail website to the Trusted Sites section under the Security tab within Internet Options helps. You also might need to adjust the zone settings to reflect your change within the trusted section.

Well, this is really bizarre.

I added the gmail site to the trusted sites. Shut down IE and restarted. Tried to go to the gmail page, and it opens another window with trusted sites/protect mode off in the lower right.. but the page still goes blank with the same caution icon in the lower left. Weird.

Is this a Gmail problem or a Vista/IE7 problem?

btw.. not sure if you are aware, but the graphic you are using in your sig is not displaying... at least not here. I can see other sig images, just not yours. fyi..

it sounds like a gmail problem, protected mode should not cause any problems and should be turned on.also i can't see his sig but all others i can indeed see,i think he is using an unsupported image type.

Have you tried restoring your browsers default settings?

Just tried that, and it appears to have made the problem worse..
now instead of it trying to load the gmail page and failing, it continues in an endless loop of trying to load the page over and over again.

Also turned off the phishing filter, but that did not make any difference either.
